免疫学とその関連領域の研究は、分子レベルでの微細で精緻な知見が、膨大な量蓄積してきましたが、
個々の分子やパスウェイの微視的、分析的な情報だけでは免疫系の全貌を理解し制御するのは困難です。
私たちは、分子レベルの知識を統合し、システムの集積としての「生体の免疫」を理解し、
臨床的な応用にまで発展開花させる免疫学を目指しています。
さらに、体細胞のリプログラミングと種々組織細胞の分化・再生の分子機構、
またそれらのエピジェネティック制御や、代謝異常、老化、腫瘍微小環境など、
高次生命システムとその異常に関わる幅広い医学・生物学上の問題について、独創的な研究を推進しています。
In the research areas on immunology and related fields, detailed and accurate information on each molecules has been accumulated in huge amount, while it is not easy to understand entire aspects of the immune system only by focusing on each single molecules and pathways under an analytical point of view. We are trying to understand “the immune system in living organisms” by integrating knowledge and information at the molecular levels, so that such understanding may also lead to clinical application as well.
We are also promoting creative research projects on a variety of biomedical issues in relation to high-order biological systems, including molecular mechanisms, especially epigenetic regulation, of reprogramming, differentiation and regeneration of various tissue cells, as well as metabolic disturbance, senescence and tumor microenvironment.

1903年（明治36年）4月、常岡良三助教諭（のち教授）の元、衛生細菌学教室として開講。

Prof. Ryozo Tsuneoka - 在任: 1903年（明治36年）4月
～1942年（昭和17年）8月 - うち、1939年（昭和14年）8月
～1942年（昭和17年）8月は学長を兼務。
1923年（大正12年）3月、微生物学・衛生学と改称。
1934年（昭和9年）3月、赤野六郎講師が衛生学助教授に任ぜられる（のち初代教授）。
衛生学教室が独立し、微生物学教室となる。

2003年（平成15年）4月、大学院重点化に伴って大学院感染免疫病態制御学となる。
2007年（平成19年）4月、大学院免疫・微生物学と改称。
2011年（平成23年）4月、大学院免疫学／免疫学教室に改組。
2022年（令和4年）4月、共同研究講座「分子免疫ウイルス感染防御学」設置。
